The viability scan can be undertaken between 6 and 10 weeks into the pregnancy. While you wont be able to see much of baby right now, its a great test for reassurance if youve suffered previous miscarriages for example. The gender scan is usually carried out 20 weeks into the pregnancy on the NHS.
When do you get your first scan NHS?
If youre pregnant in England youll be offered an ultrasound scan at around 10 to 14 weeks of pregnancy. This is called the dating scan. Its used to see how far along in your pregnancy you are and check your babys development. The scan may also be part of a screening test for Downs syndrome.
Can you request an early pregnancy scan NHS?
Its natural to be worried if youve had a miscarriage before, but you may not be offered a scan if your GP is happy that your current pregnancy is going well. If you experience any pain or bleeding though, contact your GP or midwife straight away so they can arrange an early scan for you.
What happens if a pregnancy isnt viable?
When pregnancy is nonviable, it will either miscarry on its own or a surgical procedure, such as dilation and curettage (D&C) or medication may be needed to remove remaining fetal tissue. Its important to note that there are no treatments available or ways to save a nonviable pregnancy.
